The NINTH INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR on
"ENGINEERING EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL REALIZATION OF YOUNG
ENGINEERS", held on 10-th of August 2017, was hosted by the Faculty of
Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology of Osijek,
and the Croatian Chamber of Electrical Engineers, with the Bulgarian
Organizing Committee with representatives from Federation of Scientific
Engineering Unions in Bulgaria (FNTS), Union of Electronics, Electrical
Engineering and Telecommunications, Bulgaria (CEEC), TU-Gabrovo, Ruse
University "Angel Kanchev" - Rouse and
the House of Science and Technology - Ruse. This was a one-day event where participants
from universities, research institutions and companies shared their
experiences on the topic of the seminar. In this and past editions of the
seminar the focus of the discussions and the representatives were mainly
participants from the Balkan countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria,
Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, also Germany and Italy.
Presenters make short, 10-15 minute, presentations in English. The emphasis of the seminar is on
engineering education and the prospects for its future development. Ideas and
solutions are discussed to improve the theoretical and practical training of
engineers, vocational education, methods for improving the practical skills
of the young engineers in the Balkan countries. The problems faced by the
educational institution in each country are specific, yet similar. One
difficult but common for all Balkan countries problem is the brain-drain of
graduating high-school students, who are potential applicants to the local
Universities, to other EU countries. In this dynamic and competitive
environment, new, innovative solutions have to be applied. For instance, the
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Informatics and Information Technology in
Osijek presented their extensive outreach program to all high-school students
in the vicinity of Osijek. A well-designed web portal for job applications at
local industrial companies is popular resource for the students at the
university. The informal setting at the seminar afforded
many opportunities to expand the cooperation between the several NGOs
participating in the seminar, public and private universities, research institutes
and organizations in the field of engineering education and the development
of joint research projects, exchange of teachers and Students. Discussed were
the participation in future scientific conferences and seminars. Cooperating institutions with the NINTH
